Checkpoint Charlie was one of the most popular border crossing during the cold war. It is the main symbol of the division in Berlin. It became a border for the Americans, British and French who wanted to go to East-Berlin on August 23rd, 1961. Its name was derived from the passing points: Checkpoint Alpha, Checkpoint Bravo and lastly Checkpoint C which became «Charlie» in Morse language. There is a Billboard which informs people who wanted to get through to the other side of the wall. It's well known because on October 27th , 1961, the East-Berlin authorities refused access to
Edwin A. Lightner who was the assistant chief of the U.S mission in Berlin.
